JULIETTE KAYYEM: "YOU DON’T WANT FRICTION"
Juliette Kayyem, a professor at Harvard University and CNN’s National Security Analyst, was one of eight attendees we filmed at the American Society for Public Administration’s annual conference in Hollywood, California between March 20 and March 24th. This is the four in a series that appears on Thursdays in this space.
Though many people tend to focus on disaster preparedness, for events like hurricanes and tornadoes, Kayyem, who is an expert in managing security, emphasizes in this video that she wants to talk about the preparation that’s needed when attendees are expecting to have fun. This includes planning for events like the World Cup or the upcoming Olympics in Los Angeles, which she calls “mega-event’ planning.
As she says, “You’re going to want a strong response plan, a strong communications plan, family unification plan and all of the things that we think about in anticipation of disruption. That planning will make you better prepared and will minimize the disruption, if you do it well.”
As she points out, “this stuff is hard because people’s expectations when they go to a fun event, a sporting event, is not security. Security is friction (and) people don’t want friction at these events.”
