MANAGEMENT UPDATE.

TRANSFORMING LOCAL GOVERNMENT IN 2026

In our recent conversation with Troy Riggs, the new executive director of the Alliance for Innovation, he mentioned the success of the 2025 Transforming Local Government conference, which was held in April and had 300 attendees and 66 speakers.

Now, AFI is inviting submissions for presentations at next year’s TLG conference to be held in Dallas from April 20-22 in 2026.

According to a release last week from AFI, the conference provides a chance to share (and learn about) “innovative solutions to local government challenges”.

Here’s a sampling of several presentations from April 2025:

  • Enhancing Education and Blight Reduction – Using AI-Powered Code Enforcement in Stockton, CA.

  • Immersive Visualization –  Driving Investment and Urban Planning in Arizona (with the ASU Next Lab and the City of Surprise, creating a “detailed digital representation” of an area of the city, using 3D modeling, game engines and interactive story maps to “attract investors, engage residents and showcase downtown potential.”

  • Crafting Local Government Podcasts – for example, the creation of an award-winning podcast by the City of Novi, Michigan (population about 66,000)

  • Innovating in Public Safety - Building an Advanced Crisis-Intervention Team, with the City of Olathe, Kansas, and a social worker from Johnson County Mental Health Centers describing the crisis response team that “helps individuals receive the care they need while promoting public safety.”

AFI’s submission instructions for 2026 include the chance to discuss case studies by sharing stories of  “creative and innovative projects and programs.” Options also include the chance to run an interactive session focused on using new tools or focused on new skills. The organization is also looking for thought leadership, including “topics of innovation and foresight that will help shape the future of local government.”

The submission deadline is September 15, 2025. The “call for sessions” submission form is here.
