VOICES FROM THE GFOA: EPISODE 1.

The following short video of GFOA Executive Director Chris Morrill was one of seven we filmed at the organization’s annual conference in Orlando, Florida, between June 11 and June 13.

We will be sharing each of those short videos over the coming weeks.

In this one, Morrill talks about the Government Finance Officers Association’s current activities (lots of “rethinking” about the traditional ways of doing business) and shares key moments of the three-day conference activity.

A handful of highlights from the video:

  • “One of the major themes that we'll be working on this year is some of our rethinking initiatives. A major one is rethinking budgeting. For the last three years, we’ve really stepped back and looked at (whether this is) a time that we can get past incremental budgeting and really look at new ways to do budgeting, based on new behavioral science and new ways technology has grown.”

  • This year at the conference, more time and attention were devoted to Leadership skill development. “We’ve found this has been really critical . . .I think people are really interested in learning, not just the technical skills, but more and more about leadership.” The reason? The increasing role that finance officers play “in resource allocation, particularly in these polarized environments.”

  • Not surprisingly, one of the top interests of attendees this year was artificial intelligence.

(In 2023, we also produced a number of filmed interviews at GFOA’s annual conference in Portland, which we ran as one big feature under the headline “Voices from the GFOA.”)
