MANAGEMENT UPDATE.

A NEW SOURCE OF WORKERS FOR STATES AND LOCALITIES

Beginning in the new year, there’s going to be a new source of workers for state and local governments – the people who will now be departing from the federal government as campaigns cease to function and people depart from the federal government in the wake of a new administration.

How can states and localities take advantage of this opportunity? One answer is being provided by a new organization called Work for America, about which we wrote a Management Update about a month ago. It is, as we wrote, “committed to making public service a desirable, accessible, and stable career path that uplifts families, communities and our country,"

Just last week, Work for America launched a new talent matching program “designed to connect experienced, mission-driven public servants with essential roles in state and local government,” according to a release. Dubbed Civic Match, this online platform provides connections between a vetted pool of candidates and hiring managers, all at no cost to participating governments or jobseekers.

“The platform offers personalized onboarding, regular updates when new candidates meet hiring criteria, and ongoing support throughout the hiring process,” according to Caitlin Lewis, executive director of Work for America.

“A new administration in DC brings fresh opportunities and a wave of talented public servants ready for their next mission,” she adds. “Now is the moment for city and state governments to bring these leaders home. There are over 4,000 political appointees whose jobs end on inauguration day, and cities and states across the country are looking for high level talent from parks commissioners to the head of human services to directors of city planning.”

As of this writing, Civic Match already has 450 resumes in hand from entities including the White House, a score of federal agencies and campaigns from both parties. Meanwhile over twenty cities and states are already engaged in the effort, including Kansas City, Missouri, Philadelphia, and Cleveland.

For entities which want to access the Civic Match platform and onboard as a hiring partner, email civicmatch@workforamerica.org. Meanwhile, jobseekers can click here to submit resumes and explore opportunities to work for states and local governments.
