MANAGEMENT UPDATE.

SURPRISING NEWS ABOUT DEPARTING FEDERAL WORKERS

With thousands of federal employees losing their jobs – and still more waiting for the axe to fall, it might be assumed that many of them are sick and tired of government work – and ready to move to the private sector or not-for-profits.

It’s likely that’s true for some, but a recent survey of federal workers across the country by Civic Match, came to a vastly different set of conclusions.

Civic Match is a nonprofit program of Work for America, which has successfully set about trying to connect workers leaving the federal workspace with jobs in state and local government.

Here were some of the survey findings, based on more than 500 responses from federal workers:

  • “Despite economic uncertainty, 52% of surveyed workers said they are almost certain or very likely to pursue state or local government jobs.

  • Only 7% reported being less interested in public service since recent layoffs.”

  • “Among respondents with 1–3 years of experience, a staggering 74% plan to stay in public service—highlighting a strong pipeline of early-career talent eager to serve.”

  • 54% of federal workers said they are open to relocating for the right job, and among those, 77% are willing to move to small or mid-sized cities—underscoring their flexibility and dedication.”

  • “Up to 60% of respondents said they would be willing to work for a mayor or governor from the opposing political party.”

  • “Among early career professionals (1–3 years experience), that number rises to 67%—a clear sign this workforce is driven by mission, not partisanship.”

"These are people who’ve given everything to public service—and even after being pushed out, they’re still raising their hands to serve,” Caitlan Lewis executive director of Work for America told us. “That kind of commitment is rare, and it’s exactly what our communities need right now.”
