ASPA: ADVANCING PUBLIC SERVICE

Just a couple of weeks ago, the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) held its annual conference, in Hollywood California.

“Months in the making, this event brought together more than 1,400 professionals from across the public service community—spanning sectors and transcending geographic boundaries—as we work together to build a bridge to renewal and resilience,” said Bill Shields, executive director of ASPA, which is dedicated to advancing the art, science, teaching, and practice of public and non-profit administration.

Since its founding, the organization has served as a bridge between the academic world of researchers and the practical world of government employees at the federal, state, and local levels. With multiple international members, city managers, nonprofit leaders, scholars, and students, the organization works to elevate the public service profession and promote the essential values of accountability, professionalism, ethics, and social equity.

Local chapters provide professional development and networking. In addition, special sections cover areas such as budgeting, health and human services, ethics, democracy and social justice, environmental justice, emergency and crisis management, international interests, and much more.

ASPA also houses specialized units like the Center for Accountability and Performance (CAP) which addresses the modern requirement for government agencies to be results-driven, and the H. George Frederickson Center for Social Equity, which seeks to ensure that public administration promotes social equity, the general welfare and protection of rights, and the dignity of all individuals while fostering tolerance, mutual respect, and embracing diversity and inclusion.

In addition, ASPA is the home of the Public Administration Review (PAR), which provides research on governance and management and is available in both print and digital forms. This is complemented by the PA TIMES, a magazine available both in print and online that focuses on best practices and current issues facing public managers.

NOTE: Katherine Barrett and Richard Greene, publishers of Greenebarrett.com, are executive advisors to ASPA. Starting this week, this website will feature short videos filmed at the conference with a new one appearing every Thursday, starting April 2 through the third Thursday in May.
