Real government efficiency is about delivering better services for the public—faster, clearer, fairer, and more transparent—while also spending dollars wisely. With closer proximity to service delivery and constituents, state and local leaders are focusing on practical efficiency approaches that deliver better impact and value for their communities.

Enter the new Future of Government Efficiency Council—an initiative of the Center for Digital Government and Governing. It’s open to members from state city and county government who are in key roles that impact the efficiency and effectiveness of government.

By creating a potent network of people from around the nation, the Council aims to uncover and publicize practical, actionable ways to improve efficiency whether government entities are faced with budget challenges, a changing regulatory environment, or a growing demand to provide transparency.

The Council will focus on three connected themes:

• Better Budgeting and Spending will focus on how budgeting, grants, and procurement can be used as levers to deliver better services more efficiently.  As Teri Takai, Chief Programs Officer of the Center for Digital Government, explains, “When governments budget and spend more efficiently, residents feel the difference.

  
  

  Budgets become tools for results rather than ledgers. Grants move faster with shorter applications and clearer expectations. Procurements close more quickly, more purchases happen through standardized and competitively priced contracts, and staff time shifts to higher-value work.

• Modern Tools and Services will examine customer experience, artificial intelligence, shared services, and information technology—how governments design better services that people can use and that staff are able to deliver efficiently.

  
  

• Operations and Stewardship will address facilities, permitting, fraud prevention, and hiring—the backbone functions that determine whether frontline services are reliable and cost effective.
